House by Ted Dekker, Frank E. Peretti
1.0
I was going to try to be generous and give it 2 stars because it had some kind of cool horror visuals, but that can't save this book.
First off, I didn't know this book was religious when I bought it (it was 50 cents at a yard sale and looked like a classic cheesy horror novel) but once I found out I decided to give it a go. First off, at its basic, horrible characters with a predictable plot as well as predictable resolution ending (they quite literally prayed and it saved them. A little deus ex machina).
The worst part for me though was, as a metal health professional who specializes in trauma care, this books "handling" of trauma was disgusting. All or our characters had DEEP histories with trauma (I'm talking abusive parents, being sexually abused, death of children, etc). Therefore all these characters were behaving in a way that resulted from their trauma and was a trauma response. Yet this book calls those trauma responses "sins," that they should be punished for. No thank you.
Here ends my rant about House.
