The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery
4.0
This was an enjoyable read, but I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting some insight into what it is like to "be" an octopus - how they experience the world, what their senses are like, how they are like other animals and how they are different. This might be a tall order, because I learned just enough about octopuses from this book to know they are so very alien to us that it is probably impossible to really know how they think, feel and experience they world.
This book is more akin to a memoir of the author's relationships with a few specific octopuses, and a love letter to octopuses in general. Her stories of her interactions with these fascinating animals give some tantalizing glimpses into what octopuses are like, but I felt it was a little long on sentiment and short on science. I was hoping for something more like [b:Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Know|6332526|Inside of a Dog What Dogs See, Smell, and Know|Alexandra Horowitz|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1347980799s/6332526.jpg|6518250], by [a:Alexandra Horowitz|2874371|Alexandra Horowitz|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1439179096p2/2874371.jpg]. This book, while enjoyable, didn't give me the insight into octopuses the way Horowitz's book showed me what it's like to be a dog.
