Normally, something in me tries to like the characters in the book I’m reading—they become friends I have to say goodbye to at the end. But I have to say, this goodbye wasn’t hard at all. Alix and Kelley fight for Emira, and I ended up hating both of them. I loved reading about the friendship between Zara and Emira. Seeing all the different nuances of racism hurt in all the ways they should.
