When my son re-introduced dinosaurs to me last year, he instigated in me a love for paleontology and all things “ancient.” I read Dr. Brusatte’s last book—The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs—and rated it an easy five stars. Well, he’s done it again. “The Rise and Reign of the Mammals” is utterly fantastic.

I am astounded at the sheer amount of information we have on ancient mammals. Almost every single fact in this book was something completely novel to me. But on top of all the new things I learned, I am in awe at Dr. Brusatte’s ability to make it fun.

Scattered throughout the chapters are tiny novellas that bring the ancient stories trapped in fossils and mummies to life. He narrates the deaths of mammoths and rodents with equal capability and does so in a way that captures the imagination. It’s comparable to looking at a rock-trapped fossil at a museum versus a taxidermied version of the same creature.

This book calls out to our inner six-year-old, saying “come and learn about some of Earth’s coolest creatures.” I am glad I listened. The Rise and Reign of the Mammals is one of the best books of 2022–maybe even one of my favorite books of all-time.
