The Good House by Tananarive Due
5.0

Two years after her son's suicide in the basement of her grandmother's house during a 4th of July party, Angela Toussaint returns to the house to try to get some closure. Things do not go as planned.

This is a supernatural horror dealing with the consequences of abusing magic.

I loved this book. Or. Well. I knew I WOULD love this book and that's why I stuck with it. The first 30% really dragged and it felt like way too much exposition and world building. It felt unnecessary. In the back half of the book you see it really IS necessary. I loved the twists and turns in this book and highly recommend it. If you feel like giving up I encourage you to stick with it.

I DO feel like 100 pages could easily be trimmed off of the damn thing if there wasn't such a focus on Angela's longing for her first love Myles in the early portion, but in hindsight I can let that gripe go.
