I deeply enjoyed this book, from the truly fear inducing scenes to the many references (and self-aware commentary on references) to other pillars of horror in film and literature.

That said, I did find the book a little lacklustre towards the end, and having noticed the reference to Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in the Castle in the naming of the protagonist Merry I found the end ‘reveal’ to be (very mildly) predictable.

I don’t think the prose was the best I’ve ever read, however they did give me an (almost) Stephen King vibe in how easy it was to read them and picture the scenes in my mind.

I liked that at the back of the book many of the references are listed, it’s fun having your suspicions of a reference confirmed.
