Even though this book is longer, I enjoyed the whole thing. It made me laugh out loud so many time, which is unusual for me. I loved all the music references throughout and listening to her playlist and other playlists with songs from the book while I was reading. It’s kind of predictable, but it’s just so much joy to read. I liked how it showed a relationship beginning as friends (under the disguise of fake dating) and how it wasn’t so fast. There isn’t sex, but there are a couple steamy parts. It’s also about friendship, family struggles and being a college student. So glad it was on Oprah Daily’s best of 2022 list! I want to go back and read Love in Color now.

“They don’t want to put in the effort that it would take to secure you, because they know you see through their shit, so they make out like it’s impossible, that you’re stush. They’d rather act like there’s something defective with you than be the guy that’s worthy of you, because that would mean they have to face their own shit … so they leave you alone.” P90

The waffle had been drizzled with honey instead of herbs and spices… it was the perfect explosion of sweet and savoury, a sublime balance of honey and spice.” P175

“I wanted Brown Sugar to be a place where girls could feel powerful. And the music is the ultimate company. Songs about love and lust and loss. It speaks. It connects. I want to connect. Make people feel less alone.” P281
