Free books are great. But mostly, they are really only good, sometimes even a little less than if you know what I mean. This was truly great. Like another reviewer, maybe I did get this on World Book Day through Amazon Crossing. I think it is the first of the author's works to be translated from Spanish. This saga of a Mexican family ranching and farming as political unrest grows and encroaches on generations of labor is lyrical, moving and magical. It does move slowly, be advised, stimulating action is not on the menu here, but nevertheless the inventiveness drew me in immediately. The characters are given to thought, the surroundings are given to description and the hero is a miracle.
