Catherine, Called Birdy
by Karen Cushman
Catherine, Called Birdy surprised me with how consistently funny it was. Our narrator is Catherine, a spunky forward thinking teenager in the 13th Century. Determined to stave off all the suitors that have been arranged by her greedy father, Catherine argues and acts her way out of each one until the repulsive Shaggy Beard makes his intentions known.
Dripping with historic detail, this book is a glimpse into a very different period of time. Catherine grows as the book progresses, finding things of value outside of her own wants and desires. The narrator for the audiobook was adequate, but she sounded far too old for the part. While the ending wrapped up a little too tidly, this was still a wonderful read, keeping me rooting for Catherine the whole way.
