Children of Virtue and Vengeance by Tomi Adeyemi

5.0

You are the children of the gods. You shall never be alone.

I thought this book was fantastic. I thought it was a really great follow-up to the first book in which Zelie and Amari fulfill their quest to bring magic back. It's a look at what happens after the dust settles. There's trauma from everything that went down that the characters have to deal with, and not everything is golden and perfect, there's still a lot that has to be done and things that are wrong.

I thought that the plot was pretty compelling and there was a lot of character development in addition to the action that was happening. It was a great mix for me. Seeing more of the magic system was so fun, and I love the integration of all the other magi into the story. Character-wise, I felt like Zelie and Amari both changed and developed, but they did it in a very believable way. I got frustrated with both of them, but their actions were all very authentic to their characters, so I wasn't frustrated in such a way that I was frustrated with the book.

I really like the change in Zelie's love interest in this book. I have to admit that I adore Roen. I thought that it was a tad bit ironic, but I feel like his character is Rhett Butler in a fantasy world. There was one scene that was literally a play by play from GWTW, and some of his lines...I'm almost positive that they are only slightly changed from some of Rhett's lines. I had that feeling during Blood and Bone, but it was inescapable in this one. So that's probably why I like him so much. But anyways, I like that we get to see more of him because he was one of my favorite side characters. I was very sad that Tzain was a little bit more in the background in this one though.

Overall, I thought that this was fantastic. I didn't really have expectations for a follow-up, so I was quite pleased with the second installment of this series. THAT ENDING THOUGH! Such a cliffhanger! I was super not prepared with the way that it would end, and I have no clue as to what is going to happen next!
