Golden Gates: Fighting for Housing in America by Conor Dougherty

5.0

Written by a Bay Area-based NYT economics reporter, this is a brisk and incisive overview of California's dire housing situation. The book focuses primarily on the 2010s YIMBY movement, but there's enough historical context to provide a clean outline of the political forces which laid the groundwork for the problems we're currently facing. As someone who's researched and written articles about SF's postwar development, I highly recommend this book for general-audience readers — and new residents in particular — who feel bewildered by our state's glacial (and our resident's often contradictory) responses to this exceedingly complicated problem.
