Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo

4.0

“be a person with knowledge not just opinions”
Girl, Woman, Other is a collection of short stories, intertwined to form a web that represents the black British experience. We follow twelve black women including one non-binary character in a cleverly constructed novel that highlights the many facets and issues of their lives. I flew through this novel for the writing style is both ingenious and captivating.
Evaristo has managed a huge cast of characters brilliantly by creating smooth transitions in the storyline. The timeline is dictated by the lives of the characters as opposed to a generational sequence that often leads to confusion especially when dealing with so many characters. I found it easier to track the events and follow the storyline.
The chapters connect in wonderful ways to reveal the subtle difference in perspectives of two people with respect to their relationship.
My singular issue with the book was that towards the end I found it a tad difficult to keep up with the number of characters and secretly longed for some of my favourite characters to resurface.
Regardless, it is an informative and insightful read, one that I highly recommend.
