The Best of Me
by Nicholas Sparks
Lots of characters to keep track of in this one and the ending is pretty explosive. It was fairly predictable but in a satisfying way I suppose. There were truly some beautiful scenes in this book (the wildflowers) and you can't help but root for the main characters, but the "bad" characters felt one dimensional for me. They were bad because they were bad and single-minded in their badness to the point of destruction. Sometimes this book read a bit like The Notebook because the love story starts when the main characters are young and they meet again as adults and letters play a big part in their reunion time together. There's more violence in this book like in his last book Safe Haven. It's not enough to dominate the story, but it's enough to make some scenes tough to read. Overall, I think diehard Nicholas Sparks fans will like his recent offering, but it probably won't end up being anyone's favorite book by him.
