The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

  • Plot- or character-driven? Character

4.0

The Picture of Dorian Gray explores the human condition in a darker and unconventional tone. It's an exploration of beauty, morality and the corrupting influence of desire.

📖 A Gothic Horror that centers Dorian Gray as he sinks into a life of crime and gross sensuality, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait grows day by day into a hideous record of evil, which he must keep hidden from the world.

✨ Review ✨
I will start out by saying that this is very much a product of its time. I myself find it to be a interesting perspective into history and to quote the book itself 'The books that the world calls immortal are books that show the world it's own shame.' For this I wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if you are interested in classics this would be near the top of my list.

Dorian Gray is a beautifully written book and the way in explores shallowness, vanity and casual cruelty is incredible. At its heart it's a character study steeped in the reality of human nature. Everyday people put beauty and youth before happiness and this shows the consequences of that kind of shallowness.

If you need a strong plot then this book probably isn't for you but if like me you find in fascinating to sit in a characters mind then I recommend.
