What did Tashi do? by Anangsha Alammyan
4.0

When a hardworking, self-made woman is blackmailed by a stranger, who now has the power to rip apart the world she had carefully built for herself down, what does she do?

Most importantly, what did Tashi do?

To be honest, this is not the genre I usually read, but the premise sounded so promising. Also, I was putting off reading this for so long because I feared that this story would resort to the narrative of victim-blaming and victim shaming. I feared that this book would preach "Don't take nudes if you don't want it leaked" narrative. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised.

The language is lucid and elegant at the same time. It is a short and easy read, perfect for beginners too. The narrative is gripping and provides an insight into how Tashi Chotten thinks and reacts. Maybe because the story is loosely based on the author's struggles, I found it authentic and heartfelt while reading it.

But perhaps the main reason I love this book is that it serves as a kind of a guidebook for people in a crisis like this. Cybercrime is rampant, and Indian cyber crime rules are kind of a joke. Also, people are unaware of the legal provisions that can be done when faced with a crisis like this. I was impressed when I researched more and found out that the sections and legislations mentioned in the book were legit.

Perhaps, the fact that a lot of people can relate to Tashi Chotten is an indicator that we as a society should do some serious rethinking with regards to crimes against women.
