The Kid Who Ran for President
by Dan Gutman
Delightfully cynical for a kids book. Judson Moon is railroaded into running for president by a friend who points out that Judson is likable, has an appropriately presidential name, and parts his hair on the side, so clearly it is meant to be. What else do you need? After all, "People don't want a smart president! They want a president who makes them feel good!"
Before long Judson is running under the Lemonade Party with his retired neighbor June as VP nominee, a perfect pair: "She's old and I'm young, she's black and I'm white, she's smart and I'm dumb." Little things like that pesky constitutional age requirement and having no real platform or even an informed opinion cannot stop the Moon-June ticket.
I had to check the publication date to confirm that this really was written back in 1996. It somehow echoes the 2000 and 2008 campaigns as well as taking jabs at every president since FDR. Judson's election-night speech is a payoff worthy of the rest of the book.
