Pearl by Siân Hughes
4.0
#42 of 2023 and my sixth #BookerwithBay from the 2023 longlist – Pearl by Siân Hughes.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
(3.5 rounded up)
Pearl follows Marianne and her life story – from unexpectedly losing her mother at age 8 to becoming one, it grapples with questions of grief, the lack of closure from her mother’s disappearance, shifting identity, parenting (specifically, motherhood), postpartum depression, memory, and the importance of shared experience. This was a beautiful and sad book that made me exceptionally grateful for all of the mothers in my life.
