Nightingale's Lament
by Simon R. Green
This might be my new favourite of the series. I really enjoyed reading about John running away from Walker, his past with different people, him realising perhaps he isn’t as powerful yet still making it out of situations because of himself and saving the people around him, the new characters like Julien and Dead Boy and how different they all are from each other, the different vibes of everywhere John goes, and lastly, the dynamic of John and Cathy.
The last book I was worried about Suzie dying but I never doubted John wouldn’t make it out of the situation. But in this book, there was a period where I had to stop and come to terms that perhaps John would lose this time. And because of how shocked I was about the whole thing, when John realised he only had himself instead of his usual tricks and beat Jonah just by staring him down, I was overjoyed. I like John having to take a step back and realise other people can do what he can’t but I also like it when he beats the odds.
I’m still clueless about John’s mom though. All the clues point to her being a very high and powerful being. But I’m still not quite too sure what exactly that is.
Overall, I really enjoyed the storyline. I hadn’t expected Ross to be nearly dead but it was a good twist I think. I really liked the new places John visited and how different the vibes were. Once again, the amazing imagination of Simon R. Green strikes. The fight scene in the newspaper building was so good.
