Apprentice to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
5.0

"It was dark.
A fitting scene for confronting what was arguably the ugliest part of humanity: betrayal."

I will start by saying I took my sweet time reading this book, using it as a ray of sunshine through a darker time in my life. From the colorful fairytalesque world to the lovable and charming characters, I found myself enjoying this book a lot. There was giggling and feet-kicking-the-air involved, and I could not rate it lower than a 5/5, even if I tried nitpicking it.

The plot was giving wild goose chase for most of the book, but everything tied together in the end. The characters and relationships evolved with the story, and we got more insight into their lives, making me attached to them.

What I really loved was the depiction of siblings in this book. Usually, authors (especially those who grew up without siblings) tend to portray the dynamic, and especially love, between siblings as something flimsy and easily breakable. I grew up with a younger brother, and no matter how much he wronged me, I would always choose him and always put him first. This is exactly the dynamic I saw between Evie, Gideon, and Lyssa and between Trystan, Clare, and Malcolm. I feel like Hannah does a great job at capturing the essence of the complexity of disappointment and betrayal you feel at the hands of your siblings, but also the easiness with which you forgive them because, at the end of the day, they are your ride or die.

Something else I enjoyed about this book was the fairy tale elements I found in it. From the reference to Rapunzel to simply the presence of a dragon, magical plants, and ancient beasts that interact with Evie's kindness and candor. Someone clearly gave Hannah a blender because she mixed so many amazing elements together in the canvas of this book.

Overall, this book is amazing, lighthearted and cozy, and I would recommend you to read it!
