this book is so richly atmospheric and so detailed in what exactly the film industry of the 80s and 90s entailed and i adored it for that.

while it definitely is a horror story, i didn't really feel like it was a Horror Story, y'know? it was more of a dark, twisting mystery with horror elements, and the rich atmosphere only added to that. that's not me saying this is bad by any means, i was just a little let down by the lack of spooks that i had built up in my head. but if i had approached this expecting less ghouls and ghosts, i would've been so delighted and probably given this 4 or more stars.

the two protagonists are complex and complicated bisexuals who are a little annoying at times, and that's why i loved them. i felt so immersed in 1993 mexico alongside montserrat and tristan and the weird nazi occultist circle they stumbled into. their lives felt full and real and they both felt like they'd lived them, with all the baggage that came along with it.

i could feel the amount of research and love moreno-garcia put in this book. very very good, just didn't scratch the horror itch as much as i'd like. still compelling, still a book i will return to in the future!
