The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan

4.0

"Take what you can have. Rejoice in what you can save, and do not mourn your losses too long."

This is the first time I've given less than 5 stars to a Wheel of Time book. For starters, this pacing was incredibly slow. The book was one slow 800-page burn toward an 88-page mad dash to crazy battles, deaths, resurrections, and more deaths. I'm sad to see Asmodean go, he was actually growing on me and his redemption arc could have been really interesting. Moiraine's death was a major loss to the Two Rivers folk. As much as they resented her influence, she acted as a guide and protector when they needed it most. They will surely feel the lack of her.

I loved Mat's continued reluctant acceptance/rejection of his role in things, especially his inability to let good men die because of foolish leaders. Rand's descent into the beginnings of madness, his battle for selfhood with the ghost of Lews Therin, and his major growth as a leader was well written.

So why 4 stars? Jordan writes most women like his characters seem to view them- subservient, conniving, cruel, catty, etc. Nynaeve is... infuriating. Elayne and Egwene are little better. Same for Min, Leane, and Siuan. He seems incapable of giving them the same growth and capacity for seriosu change that his male leads have.

Also- where was Perrin??? How does an author just drop a main character for an entire book??
