Better Not Pout
by Annabeth Albert
I generally love Annabeth Albert books, and although I liked this one, I didn't love it the way I expected to. That might have partially been my fault - the copy of the book reads as if Teddy will be more 'more' than he is (flamboyant, twink elf anyone?), and instead he's a regular guy with a job he loves who just happens to be dressed as an elf for a holiday event.
Part of the issue might have been the conflict - or lack thereof. This is a story where the conflict is entirely internal, and I love those, but this one didn't work for me. And I think the reason is that I didn't connect with either character. I liked them well enough, but not enough to care about their HEA.
At first meeting - and for the first half of the book - Nick comes across as irrationally grumpy, and I never warmed up to him afterwards. As much as I like characters like Teddy, I also never felt that we got to know him that well, or understand his motivations.
Overall, this was a sweet and cute holiday read, and if I decide to re-read it, I'll probably like it more, but on a first read I didn't love it.
