The art in this book is so striking. Thompson has a real way with detailed tableaus or even just small things that evoke meaning, like the way Raina’s car pulls away and then drops off the side of the world.
However my one qualm was that I wished it focused on the author’s relationship with his brother. There are chunks which left so much of an impact on me about the brother that I felt a little empty and unsatisfied that it wasn’t followed through in the story. Also, most importantly I wanted to know if/how the author got over the sense of guilt he had about not protecting him from the sexual abuse they suffered as children. Especially since his relationship with Raina and the contrast between how she was with her siblings made him feel guilty for what happened in his and his brother’s past.
