My name is Tisaanah. I am a free woman and yet still a slave. I am fragments of many things but a whole of only myself. I am a daughter of no worlds, and all worlds. And I am not done yet.

I went into this blind so I didn't know what to expect when I picked this up - man was it worth it!

It gripped me from the beginning, and I fell in love with the FMC who starts off as escaping her life as a slave.  Content warning - she does talk about her life as a slave and what she endured - we don't see any sexual violence.

She is strong, determined, and on a warpath to free other slaves, no matter what it personally costs her.

One of the standout elements of this book is the richly imagined universe filled with magical beings and political intrigue which I'm interested to see more development in the next books!

The political dynamics were done so well, leaving you constantly questioning who could be trusted.

Another of my favourite elements was that the FMC was not speaking her native tongue for most of the book, which made for some fun interactions between her and the MMC
- the audiobook narrater did a fantastic job doing her voice and accent

Pros
  • Interesting magic system
  • Strong, resilient and powerful MCs
  • A very slow burn and tender romance, with forced proximity

Cons
  • Pacing - it started off fast paced and intense, then dropped off for a while before picking up again later in the book (However I do think this was needs to build the relationships and world building) but I was HOOKED for the last third of the book

This was my first Carissa Broadbent book, and I can tell -it won't be my last. It was such an addictive read!

"I figured you should have something both beautiful and functional, like you." He said it so quickly that it almost didn't register. I whipped my head around to look at him.
"Max," I breathed, touching my heart with exaggerated awe, "you think I'm functional?"
A dancing smile glinted in his eyes.
"I think" he said, "that you are breathtakingly functional."
