Adalyn Grace’s debut novel takes us into the world of Amora Montora, Princess of Visidia and soon to be Queen to the throne. But on the night of her coronation, her ceremony goes terribly wrong, forcing her to flee the island on the ship of Bastian, the sun kissed pirate, and her arranged-marriage fiancé Ferrick in toe as well, much to the bane of Amora. The three embark on a quest to stop Kaven, a man bent on learning multiple magics, in order to restore balance to the kingdom and other islands. But things are not always as they seem and as Amora and her comrades get closer to Kaven, the answers that they begin to uncover to try and unify their kingdom may be their undoing instead. The truth can only be covered up for so long.

I loved this book! The magical elements, especially the Montora family’s magic of soul magic, where you can take a person’s life and you can read their soul as well was so fascinating to me, especially the soul-reading aspect (which I envisioned as kind of like visually x-raying someone’s soul). This world had so many things in it that I had never seen in a YA novel before, I cannot wait for the next installment of the series!
