Stay Out of the Basement by R.L. Stine
3.0

This book is the second in the classic goosebumps series. If I had read this one first I might have stopped reading the series altogether.

A brother and sister have a scientist for a father and a mother who has to be away from the house for an indefinite amount of time. Their father was fired weeks earlier. He had been spending a lot of time with his experiments and less time with his kids. It doesn't seem to worry their mother because she has complete trust in her husband to take care of things while she is away. After the siblings find out more about what their father is doing, he begins to share some of his experiments with them. He actually fills two bowls of green slop. When the kids don't eat it he actually says, "You are my guinea pigs." I don't care if you are the best father in the world, if I knew what he was working on "in the basement" I would never eat anything he asked me to eat. That draws a line with me. Even if it's for a story.
