I was tricked by the title into thinking this was a red riding hood retelling. Big nope. So take my review with a grain of salt, Iay be bitter that this book wasn't what I was hoping for.
The religious aspect of this is a little heavy handed and everyone was saying it was rich world building but a lot of the religion is either straight from Judaism or Catholicism so it wasn't new. Even some of the folklore was just rebranded from Judaism. This was a little disappointing as it wasn't new, just renamed. Some wasn't changed at all.
I also found it a little repetitive, if I never have to read or hear the words "wolf girl", "true born son" or "you're the prince" again it will be too soon. Also two deer metaphors back to back is a lot of deer metaphors. I didn't know that before.
As I said, I was expecting a retelling of red riding hood and I got a heavily religiously themed story centered around genocide, ethnic cleansing and a violent coup. Not what I was prepared or looking for.
