The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night

This book follows a girl named Ivy who gets whisked away to a magical school, the Halls of Ivy so she can learn to master her powers. When the Dark Queen threatens her life she goes on an adventure not only to learn about her own history but to save Croswald.

Overall I really enjoyed this book. It’s whimsical and gave me a sense of nostalgia. It reminded me a lot of when I was younger and I would pick up a book and whisked off to some magical far away land. It was a lot of fun and really magical which made it a fun read to dive into between all my college classes.

The writing was beautiful, very descriptive. Personally I enjoyed the writing style though there were moments where it felt a little bit like an info dump but considering that the author has to build up this new world for readers I think it’s worth it. Being descriptive means it’s to me that it’s more immersive and vivid than if those small details had been left out. I will admit if you’re not reading closely you can get confused, I did a few times and had to go back to make sure I understood part of the story. I can see why some people would get discouraged by this but the overall story benefits from all the details. The way D.E. Night writer makes it feel less like an overflow of information and more lifelike. I’ve always been a fan of descriptive/ flowery writing so I enjoyed it more than anything.

I’m giving this book a 3.5/3.75 just because there were a few moments where I wanted to skip ahead to get more towards the plot and Ivy as opposed to learning about the world though that could come down to my own impatience. It does have a few kinks with pacing, some parts are super slow while others go much faster and for a while I thought Ivy was a lot younger than what she actually was (16). For a good portion I thought she was about 11. Other than that though it was a fun read. The magic system was amazing and I have a love for the best busses we see a lot in the beginning. If you’re a fan of magic schools, evil queens, and adventure this book will be amazing.
