this book is another one of those that underscores the importance of hearing and understanding other people’s stories to me. i learned a lot about the history of central american countries (esp in relation to the us) and there’s a lot of information i don’t remember perfectly because i listened on audio but the stories are worth sitting with.
went to a university with an Oscar Romero scholarship but i’ll admit that i didn’t know much about this priest prior to this book. i really appreciate the relationship built up between the author and Juan Romagoza with their daily phone calls and their slow exploration of what it means to get to know someone and their story.
pairs well with undocumented americans and overlapping timelines with when crack was king.
