A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens
Seems like Dickens had it right all along: the only way to convince a person to adopt a new point of view is to appeal to their own very narrow circumstances. It reminds me of that horrible aspect of human nature in which people are unable to feel empathy for large groups of "others". The larger the group, the less they feel. Thousands of foreigners devastated by an earthquake? Who cares? That one little girl buried alive under the rubble? We must save her!
