Mechanical Hearts
by Nicole Blanchard
This is a mix of PNR and steampunk. I've read a few of the others in the series and was looking forward to this but I was left feeling I had more questions than answers.
Caroline lives with her uncaring and downright nasty aunt. Her only bright spot is her cousin Phoebe. She finally makes the decision to leave and get a better life so she can have Phoebe come and live with her. But when a storm strikes she hides out on her fathers boat. When she awakes she is definitely not where she last was! When she hitches a lift from a surly submariner with some very odd attachments and his equally enhanced crew Caroline wonders where on earth she has ended up.
I'm still kinda lost how Caroline made it from earth to otherworld and I would loved to have known in more depth how the toxins affected the people to make them grow synthetic organs. Why did Carolines Aunt hate her so much and stay unchanged from her life in Arliss?
The characters were fine but I just felt that it quickly went from antagonising each other to Ezra declaring love with not much inbetween. There was no one scene which seemed to be the big AHA moment for me.
