The Monkey's Paw
by W.W. Jacobs
Very much like an abbreviated version of one of M.R. James' short stories, this 10-minute read operates as an immediate lesson in how actions have consequences - in business terms, there is no free lunch.
Unfortunately, due to the very limited length (4134 words) there is little opportunity to provide character development, and though this has lent the story to countless re-enactments on 'The Simpsons', for me as a reader, having such minimal characterization is a drawback. However, as mentioned, from a certain standpoint this only makes the story more adaptable, and transferable to different contexts and settings, outside its gothic origin.
