The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right
by Atul Gawande
I put this book down and it got buried in a stack of something or other, so I just finished it the other night. I love the entire idea of using something as simple as a checklist to save lives and streamline processes. His examples of the usefulness of checklists in medicine are as compelling as the obstacles he describes are challenging. I hope more medical facilities will adopt the checklist to improve patient outcomes (and, as a happy byproduct, improve some of the problems caused by hierarchy, silos, and lack of team-thinking in medicine). I enjoyed reading about his research on construction and aviation and how second-nature (and vital!) checklists are in these professions.
Comment before reading: I read Atul Gawande's article on checklists in the New Yorker and liked it a lot. Wonder if the book is substantially longer than the article or if it's pretty much the same text with a book jacket instead of a magazine cover.
