As charming as this one was at times, I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as I did Aidan and Jude's story.

I DID enjoy how the traditional roles are flipped on their heads. How Brenna's the practical-minded handy woman and the headstrong one and Shawn the idealistic dreamer, a singer-songwriter with his head in the clouds.

I also loved the family drama with Brenna and her sister. I wanted there to be more of it, in fact. But with Nora Roberts you rarely get any real grit or angst. Just when it's getting good, it's solved.

The faerie/ghost story mattered less in this book, too, in my opinion. In fact, I'm not really sure either of them were necessary other than maintaining the overarching theme for the series. A lot of the whimsy from book 1 faded in this one and I'm not 100% sure why. Perhaps because outside of bickering with each other and then sleeping together Brenna and Shawn rarely interact. There's no substance to their relationship--which struck me odd because they've known each other all their lives.

Because of that, I don't really know that what spawned between Brenna and Shawn read as love for me. Instead I got sex for sex's sake, that suddenly became confessions of love out of nowhere and with no real reason. You mean to tell me that growing up with someone you never once look at them and wonder, only to fuck 'em a few times and then just be madly head-over-heels? Ehhh.

But honestly, these are pretty short, generally shallow books, that are fun sweet reads without a ton of deeper stuff to chew on, so I don't really know what else I was expecting.

I enjoyed this for what it was; I guess because I like this world and these characters, I was hoping for more than we got. 3.5 stars.
