Dash & Lily's Book of Dares
by Rachel Cohn, David Levithan
DNF!! 1/5 stars!
This was possible the worst book I have ever read.
I have never ever read worst characters that I have in this book. They are the most annoying know it all couple I have ever read about. Unfortunately this book has two perspectives Lily and Dash. The first chapter is Dash and he says something a long the lines of
“I could have been hanging out with my friends, but most of them were hanging out with their families or their Wii’s. (Wiis? Wiii? What is the plural?) I preferred to hang out with the dead, dying, or desperate books” - Dash
Please... please this is so annoying oh you’re so cool and different! This was legitimately three pages into the book and I rolled my eyes and knew that this was going to be a complete car crash.
He then says 5 pages in about Lily’s clues that she’s put out for someone to find Dash thinks they are really simple “Did she think me a simpleton, a slacker, a numbskull?” Honestly...
He then asks for help from the librarian. Urgh he thinks he’s so smart from the first clue but gets stuck on the second one but he asks for help and because the dude rolled his eyes at him and didn’t reply ( which honestly I would do if this guy was real and asked me for help) he says this little anecdote,
“Do you know me?” I persisted. “ Did I grind you to a pulp in kindergarten, and are you now getting sadistic pleasure from this petty revenge? Stephen Little, is that you? Is it? I was much young then, and foolish to have nearly drowned you in that water fountain. In my defense, your prior destruction of my book report was a completely unwarranted act of aggression.” - Dash
Why does he talk like a serial killer? He literally sounds like an old man James Bond serial killer. Isn’t he supposed to be a teenager? Or someone that’s about to go to college. He literally sounded like a psychopath talking like he’s from the 1800’s for no reason but to sound pompous and more cleverer than everybody else.
Okay so after I read Dash’s first chapter I thought maybe just maybe Lily’s won’t be as bad. But the first line she talks about how much she loves Christmas which I thought was a nice surprise but then goes on to say this...
“ I know it’s technically goodwill to all men, I drop the men because that feels segregationist/elitist/sexist/generally badist” and its goes on believe it or not. I just can’t this book was wrote in 2010 and maybe the term hipster wasn’t around then but that would be what they are. Annoying hipsters.
I’m going to give this book to charity and I honestly feel so sorry for the next person that buys this thinking they are going to curl up and read a heartwarming Christmas novel when all they are going to do is getting irritated and eye rolling every two seconds. This makes let it snow look like dickens!
Rant over.
