I am amazed—this author has nailed the unreliable narrator technique.
I am amazed at how much I am enjoying the genre of magical realism, all because my local library featured a group of magical realism books on the Libby app several months ago. I don’t think I would have ever started reading stories like this one if it wasn’t for awesome libraries and this app and my rad book friends on here.
I loved that this story had layers. I thought it was about one thing and then something entirely different happened. There are times when it seems like the main character is lucid and logical and others when we aren’t really sure if she’s nuts and bananas with chocolate on top or if the people around her are on acid and meth at the same time or even if this story is actually taking place on another planet in an alternate dimension…or maybe it’s all a fever dream?? Maybe I fever-dreamed reading this story???
I especially liked the end. It didn’t leave any loose ends. The story might continue if she chose to do a sequel, or it could be a good stopping point for just this one book. At times, the other girls did get a little obnoxious, but I believe the author conveyed their personalities well, and being obnoxious was part of that. There was some repetitive nature to the dialogue too, but again, I believe the author used that as a way to make certain characters unlikeable.
I hope the author makes more stories in this genre: it was truly entertaining.
