Long Shot
by Kennedy Ryan
I dont think I have enough words to describe this book but i will try my best. Trigger warnings through the roof with this one let´s start with that - A LOT goes down in here and there is a lot of on page details of abuse and rape.
This isn’t a cute fun sports romance - dont go into it thinking it is. It is HEAVY. It does have a happy ending which makes it worth it but the journey if rough. If you think you are mentally ready to read this, go ahead because it is incredible but it’s… a lot. I genuinely felt physically sick while reading this sometimes. I would say it’s 60% about the abuse and 40% about the romance.
We meet Iris in an abusive relationship that’s turning worse as time goes on and not knowing how to get out of it because she has to protect her child. We also meet August, a guy that met the right girl at the wrong time and has to watch her suffer (without knowing how bad it really is) for years while longing for her on the sidelines.
Wow. This is such an emotional, powerful story. I felt everything while reading this - I’ve been angry, sad, shocked, happy etc. And I have never hated a character as much as I hate Caleb. I want to go into detail about him but no words could ever explain his actions or do it justice because it’s just all terrible.
Iris however, probably one of my fav female characters I’ve read about - she is so strong! She represents so many and deserves everything pure and beautiful on earth there is. In the second half of the story we see her start to heal and grow but the aftermath of the abuse is still very much with her. And August, what a man! Their romance was so beautiful and they really had a connection right from the beginning and I love the way they met.
The writing was spectacular and there were so many highlight-worthy quotes/paragraphs. Kennedy Ryan does not shy away from showing what it’s like being in an abusive relationship, both physically and emotionally. I had to take several breaks because it felt so real.
THE EPILOGUE THO - that was everything I needed and so beautiful! Seeing how much Iris grew<33 Overall, this is an easy 5/5
“Life isn’t a road that forks or a line of numbered sliding doors. There is no alternate universe filled with only right choices. There’s just this one-just this life, and we go where are choices take us and grow wiser from our mistakes.”
