The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Daré is a beautiful, heartbreaking yet hopeful contemporary story about a fourteen-year-old Nigerian girl who struggles to find her “louding voice.” After her mother’s death, Adunni is forced to drop out of school. To help pay for food and community rent, Adunni’s father sells her to a local man who wants a third, younger wife to produce a son. Adunni flees to Lagos, where she becomes a housemaid for a wealthy family. But, she again becomes trapped, a powerless and abused slave with no means to escape to a better life. Despite her hopeless situation, Adunni is determined to find her “louding voice” and to help every girl be free.

Daré’s debut novel is brilliant and powerful. She explicitly and implicitly details the gender inequalities of women of all circumstances. From detailing Adunni being sold as a child bride to bear a son for an older man to the subtle use of “Ms.” vs “Mrs.” to recognizing the unacknowledged women who support their husbands and families, Daré transports readers to the life of Adunni and the women around her. Daré beautifully tells the story of a strong-willed girl who, despite her misfortunes, perseveres for herself and for all other girls. The Girl with the Louding Voice will make you laugh, cry, and hope. A must-read book of 2020.

“’Not his-story,’ I say. “My own will be called her-story. Adunni’s story.’”
