Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Did not finish book.
After holding on for a few books, I am finally labeling a book dnf. This is the first this year and I am not so happy about it either. DNF at Chapter 11, around 30%.

Yadriel is trans boy who wants to prove to his family that he is a brujo, a person who can summon spirits and help them cross to the land of the dead. Upon trying to summon his just departed cousin, he instead summoned the spirit of Julian Diaz, the school's bad boy.

Alright, I was so sold with the idea of this book. Latinx, ghosts, and a bad boy? I was more than excited to be reading this story. In fact, this was the book that made me the most excited so far this year. There was also a lot of good reviews with this book and it was overflowing with 5 stars. I knew I wasn't going to be disappointed. However, the excitement was short lived.

I am not okay being in the minority in regards to the opinions about this book. I badly wanted to love this. But I guess I'm not a fan of the writing. It just felt so long. All the excruciating details were being narrated. I wanted to be invested in this story. I truly do. But the style of the writing was just not for me.

I stopped reading around 30% of the book because my patience has already ran out because I have spent a lot of time listening to the audiobook and the plot barely moved. I am interested on how things are connected but I don't want to invest more time into something that I find painful to listen to. On the plus side, I loved all the representation in this book.
