The Honeys by Ryan La Sala
4.0

Four years ago an incident occurred at Aspen Conservancy Summer Academy that made Mars never want to return, until his twin sister’s tragic death. Prior to Caroline’s death she was acting different and she was afraid of something at Aspen, but what? Mars decides the best way to get answers is to find them at Aspen himself. Can he survive the rich, perfect-acting campers, especially the Honeys? The Honeys were once Caroline’s friends, a group of girls who attend to the camp’s bees with the utmost secrecy, but will they welcome Mars? Will he find out what really happened to his sister?

“The Honeys” begins super fast-paced with the death of Mars’ sister and his stay at Aspen but slows down midway once Mars begins to socialize with the Honeys. La Sala does an excellent job at including hard topics that need to be tackled including death, grieving, roles of gender in society, bullying, and feeling comfortable in your own skin. The atmosphere of Aspen has a similar feel as Midsommar, making the reader wonder when it’s going to get weird and how. I didn’t want to stop reading until I knew what the twist was. “The Honeys” is a great read for anyone who likes cult horror, and/or LGBTQIA+ representation in horror.
