Age of Myth
by Michael J. Sullivan
This book is my introduction to Sullivan's world of Elan, and it is a good one! Age of Myth is set 3000 years prior to the other books set in Elan (the two Riyira series) and Sullivan explains that the history we're told about in the Riyira books isn't totally accurate--history, after all, "is written by the victors". This sets up an interesting frame for the story of our human and elfin (Fhrey) heroes. When Raithe kills one of the Fhrey, who humans think of as immortal gods, it throws their land into chaos. This is the inciting incident for the whole book.
The plot felt familiar to me and the characters fall into archetypes pretty neatly. That said, I enjoyed the book a lot and totally got lost in the story. As long as it's fun who cares, in my opinion--it's nigh on impossible to be wholly original. The biggest recommendation I can give is that I downloaded the first volume of the Riyira Revelations before I even finished Age of Myth!
Note: I listened to this on Audible and it was really excellent in terms of narration.
