Monday Mourning by Kathy Reichs

3.0

I have been reading the bones books in order, and I’m starting to realize that they all follow the same basic pattern.

Brennan gets a case or two, they are usually somehow connected but no one believes her that they’re connected, so she sets out to prove it herself. There are usually issues with Ryan due to miscommunication and Brennan assuming he’s not interested in her. She ends up facing the bad guy alone, getting knocked unconscious, and then somehow, Ryan or another male detective figures out where she went and saves her. It ends in the hospital, with all miscommunications being resolved and the detectives explaining all the links to her.

Add in multiple pages of over-explanation of topics that don’t really add to the plot. I usually skip these pages, honestly, and I’ve never missed any information that was relevant later on.

I’m starting to wonder how Brennan doesn’t have brain damage, and how she’s an expert on seemingly unrelated things. But I like the characters, I like the mystery, and I’ll keep reading the series to see if the pattern breaks.
