Better Left Between Us by Kylee Clark

2.5

2.5 stars.

Amelia looks back on the heartbreak and secrets that lead her to weigh the worth of risking everything when, Ethan, the one constant in Amelia’s life for fifteen years uninvites her from his wedding party. She’s not able to let their story end on this note and is determined to make one last stand before he says ‘I do’.

Before I truly begin with my review, please take it with a grain of salt as the majority of reviews currently on Goodreads are much more appreciative of this novel than mine is.

I absolutely loved the prologue of BETTER LEFT BETWEEN US. It was the perfect mix of fun, racy, and is filled with intrigue. I was sure I was in for a read that I wouldn’t forget and that I’d want to scream from the rooftops about. Unfortunately, the rest of the book wasn’t what I was expecting nor hoping for.

Although this is described as a romance, and while there are elements of romance, it’s much more a book that focuses on self-reflection and a journey of self-actualization for Amelia. She is in a place in her life where she is searching for happiness and love, and to find what will accomplish this, she’s navigating all the emotions that come with this type of introspection. That said, I did enjoy her journey, primarily because I loved Carter, Amelia’s close friend and neighbor. He’s the best friend a girl could ask for, always with the right advice for the moment, a helping hand at the ready, and an ear to listen whenever Amelia needs it.

Based on the prologue, I was expecting the romance to come to fruition early on within the story’s narrative; however, it’s a slow burn… but one that’s lacking anticipation, chemistry, and tension that I would have loved to have. I think the only saving grace is that the ending is the perfect complement to the prologue, despite a middle section that leaves room for desire.
