3.5 Stars
This book was a fantastic addition to the Uglies series! As a long time fan of Uglies, I was thrilled yet skeptical when I saw Westerfeld was starting a new series within the universe. I was not the biggest fan of the companion novel, Extras, so I was not sure how this book would go. I found myself really enjoying it, though! I loved the references to old Uglies' slang, the explanation of the progression of society since the Mind Rain, and the set up of the protagonist as a twin.
Things I didn't like:
There were a few things that made me give this book a less than four-star rating. One was the way in which it skipped over time. A chapter would start with "It had been one week since..." after certain revelations, but I found myself wanting to see what happened in that window of time.
Another thing I did not enjoy was the rushed development of a relationship between two characters. Definitely YA-esque.
Finally, the last thing I didn't like is a spoiler, so proceed with caution!
While I loved the references to the original series, the brief cameo of Andrew Smith irritated me. Why put him in at all if he is only going to be mentioned in one sentence? I wanted to see more of him, since he was supposedly playing a large role in the background!
Overall, this book was very enjoyable, I read it in about three and a half hours, and I look forward to the sequel next year!
