Play the Game
by S.J. Sylvis
A slow burn hockey romance with an alpha male character and a woman who needs to be saved. The perfect combo!
Scottie is desperate for money so she does a stupid thing and fakes a photo of the new NHL goalie in Chicago to look like he was caught in a bad situation and tries to bride him. Too bad he calls her bluff but when he goes to her work to make sure the photo is deleted, he feels an attraction and a pull that he can't seem to shake.
Emory has been having a lot of bad press lately, it caused him to get traded and he wants to start fresh but women are constantly trying to drag him back into the bad press. Emory needs to clean up his act quickly. When he remembers Scottie and the pull he has towards her, he proposes a deal: Marry him to get some good press and he will pay her to give her the money she needs. Will this fake relationship grow into more or will it blow up in both their faces?
I'm always a fan of a down on her luck girl and then a man coming in and providing for her. Basically charming her pants off (literally) and paying for everything even though she tries to pay her own way. Enemies to lovers and an attraction that is fire gives this book a boost but it’s also predictable. I did enjoy the slow burn and the banter between the two main characters. Hockey players always have the best sense of humor.
Scottie was desperate for money but she was also not savage and the bribe, even though it didn’t work, never really sat well with me. It was cruel and unoriginal. It also led to trust issues between the two that could have been avoided if they had met more organically.
Overall a steamy hockey romance that was solid and enjoyable.
