Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
3.0
reflective slow-paced

I finally read 1984 by George Orwell, and while I can appreciate why this book is considered a classic, I can’t say I loved it. The themes are definitely powerful. Government surveillance, manipulation of truth, and loss of individuality are all still super relevant today. Orwell’s world-building is bleak but effective, and I can see how this book has influenced so many other dystopian stories. That said, the pacing dragged for me at times. Some parts felt more like reading a political essay than a novel, especially the long sections explaining how the Party works. I also didn’t feel much connection to the characters, which made it harder to stay invested emotionally. Overall, I'm glad I read it for the cultural significance, but I didn't find it especially enjoyable. Interesting, but not something I'd rush to reread.
