Lore by Alexandra Bracken

An adventure that kept me reading and guessing. It occasionally missed the mark, for me, in its prose: when describing the myths or throwing in little asides that felt either forced or not clear enough. Overall, though, I really enjoyed it.

The characterization, especially, was strong.
The plot was solid and caught me by surprise a few times.
The prose itself is the only thing that felt lacking to me.
The commentary on cultish family behavior and women in roles of leadership was poignant, I thought.

I won’t add this one to the classroom - lots of brutal violence and a few situations with kids involved that I’m not comfortable putting in front of 8th graders. It’s also super long, and I don’t think most of my eighth graders would stick with it through all 450 pages. It would go well in a High School library!
