The Disaster Days by Rebecca Behrens
3.0
Babysitting for her neighbors should be a simple gig but when suddenly the entire house and ground starts to shake, 13 year old Hannah is freaked out but assured that adults will be on their way. Until she cranks up the emergency radio and gets the worst possible news: the entire coast has been hit and the bridge connecting her small island of Pelling to the rest of Washington State has been destroyed. With no electricity or cell reception can Hannah keep her and the kids safe- and alive?
This survival story is suspenseful and will cause readers to think about their own abilities to survive in a disaster. Without the modern technology we rely on, characters have to get creative and their own knowledge to survive. The book does sometimes veer into reading like a handbook on how to prepare for a disaster and some moments seem unrealistic. In particular the characters go use their physical set of encyclopedias that they have lying around; helpful to their survival but unlikely for many middle graders to have these in their homes.
Overall though it is a fast paced, realistic survival story that will keep readers entertained while making them think.
