Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby
5.0

I won't spend much time talking about the plot of this novel, but in one statement-- Blacktop Wasteland is an epic, devastating thriller/character study about a man who feels forced to commit one last crime to save his family and livelihood. His decision might cost all he has worked so hard to achieve: his family, his business, and his identity.

S.A. Cosby's prose is so unique and different - some of the sentences/paragraphs are formed ith such simple basic words, but then there are times where the language is haunting, beautiful, poetic. It's just such a delight in every way.

The audio is extremely well done and it listens like a fast paced action movie, but also has such character depth and messaging, that it's so powerful.

At the end of the audio there is an interview with Cosby, that I found absolutely fascinating. He is asked why he gravitates to the thriller genre, and he said basically that it provides an opportunity to talk about themes he is interested in (racism, poverty, inequity) in a way that is more palatable to readers. This statement just hit me right in the gut because it's so heartbreakingly true. Cosby is such a genius and I will read anything he writes.

Beauregard "Bug" Montage is going to live in my heart for a while. If a crime/thriller novel written with a sense of purpose and poetry sounds appealing to you, you should definitely check this one out.
