The beginning of The Duke's Shotgun Wedding instantly drew me in. Lady Jocelyn was a woman scorned and was NOT about to take her betrayal lightly. A gun-wielding woman, making demands? Love to see it. What I didn't love was Duke Sebastian and his pompous, misogynistic demeanor. He was rude and relentless and honestly had little to no character growth. I don't have an issue with a character being assertive, but the Duke was egotistical and dismissive, and couldn't be bothered with anyone else's thoughts or concerns. Too many times I had a visceral reaction to something he said or did to Lady Jocelyn.
While initially a fan of Lady Jocelyn, I was letdown by how quickly she feel in love and began to accommodate for his behaviors. I get she felt relieved and indebted that he agreed to marry her, but did she not deserve more respect? (At times she did check him, but it didn't feel like enough to me).
I fully recognize that this is a novella and there is only so much room to present the story. But given all that we were presented with between Lady Jocelyn's financial burdens and Duke Sebastian's anger towards his mother, this maybe should have been a longer book. The characters and the needed more development. I just did not buy their romantic relationship.
Since I did like the writing and it was a pretty quick read, I am willing to try out more books by the author. This one sadly missed the mark for me.
